Update 5/11/10: auction ended, reserve not met at $22,600 with 16 bidders getting in on the action. Would have been a smokin’ deal at that price.
Ferrari 308 GTS F106AS29453. Right now Netflix, on their watch instantly list, has pretty much the complete Magnum PI catalog and, I’m somewhat sheepish to admit, I’ve watched, starting from the beginning into early season 4 over the last few months. Why you ask? Well, the show is better than I remember, the scenes around the island are cool, there are a lot of extras who went on to be stars, Shannon Doherty and Ted Danson come to mind, and I was a kid when the show was airing so the feel of that long lost world of the early 1980’s is comforting. It is this last sentiment that is probably why I really dig the 308 GTS and look on eBay and on Craigslist frequently for ‘just the right car’. This example is on eBay now and if I had the money I’d seriously consider buying it, as it has most of the details I want.
The wedge is going to come back with some authority before long, look at the way the Countach has been appreciating. This example looks fantastic. I like the way the design doesn’t fight with the safety required lights and bumper, but rather incorporates them into an overall vision.
That’s how they liked to roll in the 70’s on their Ferrari’s… big tires! Door shut line is excellent. I’ve seen some aftermarket wheels of questionable taste and prefer these originals. JUdging by where the cat is standing I don’t think the car is running.
Very inviting. I hope the roof is strong as you will probably put some weight on it to help you get in. Latching hardware seen on the door edge gives a sense of this car having very nice details.
These interiors are great in black, but even better in tan -especially the tan seats with black inserts. Passenger door panel looks to be off.
If all the buyers guides I’ve read are correct, this engine, if well maintained, will deliver years of reliable use. Nothing but well detailed clean components to be seen here. This car is near the end of the carb era for these cars.
It looks pretty spectacular, so I guess I better show the picture.
Why would I go for this one? Carbs, fresh engine, overall well maintained/clean appearance and as much as I hate to admit it: red. What would make me even more excited about it? Tan interior, original California plates and smog equipment. I’m not saying I’m days away from the purchase, nor would me going through the whole Rockford Files series have me lusting after a Couger, it’s just a childhood dream thing.
If I read your comments right, your dream 308 is on Bring a Trailer right now: http://bringatrailer.com/2010/05/06/bat-exclusive-1-family-1978-ferrari-308-gts/
Go for it!

Yes, that’s it exactly. If only my finances were in order.

A guy at Pixar has one of these. Same engine as a Fiat 8V http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_8V?
